The suggestion to dam the Mitchell river would cost about $1.2 billion so that Melbourne's water supply can be increased by about 25% and it was supposed to have been cosidered 20 years ago but people are worried about damage to the environment. One of the problems is that the river can flood often so alot of water goes to waste so we need to dam it to decrease the chance of floods in that area. It is disagreed upon mainly because the Mitchell dam is apart of a national park so not many people will give up the river without a fight. It is still unknown when the river will be dammed and even if it ever will be Dammed. The Government tried to prevent the Mitchell river from being dammed by turning it into a national park or Heritage site so that turning it into a dam would be nearly impossible because the area is protected from construction of a dam or anything else. But the dam if it was a dam it would be much more better because we will get more water than what a desalination Plant can give us. But it still could possibly an option now or for the future.
